Bukowski

I’m doing a series of ‘Lil Portraits of some (kind of) famous people. Who knows… maybe you would like to buy one? They’re tiny. Roughly 3.5″ x 3.5″ on bristol board but I’d be happy to vary the size based on your needs. I’ll do any person you want (even Daniel Tosh or Rafael Trujillo) and mail it to you for a reasonable price. Contact me and we can work out the details.
What can I say about Charles Bukowski? Either you love him or you hate him. I’ve never met anyone with an opinion of his writing that lies in between.

But regardless of whether you like his stuff his story is pretty inspiring. I mean he didn’t start writing poems until he was in his mid thirties and for the next forty years he wrote thousands of them. He also wrote tons of short stories and a hand full of novels.

Just goes to show you it’s never too late to get started.

Now go pour yourself a drink.

William S. Burroughs

When I was in high school I saw the film adaptation of Naked Lunch and decided to check out the novel it was based on. I found it unreadable and gave up but something about William Burroughs seemed very compelling to me so I ended up reading one of his earlier books, Junky, and thought it was fantastic. It’s just a straight up account of his experiences as a drug addict and is written in a frank style that is actually readable.

After finishing that I picked up Ted Morgan’s biography Literary Outlaw which I also found to be fantastic. I came to the conclusion that I like reading about William Burroughs much better than I like his experimental novels.

He’s just such an interesting character. Over the years I’ve seen Drugstore Cowboy dozens of times and his brief screen time in that film is mesmerizing to me. I think it’s his voice. I could listen to him read most anything… except of course his novels.

Bang Bang!

Scott Aukerman and Reggie Watts are two of my favorite funny people… so today I drew them.

Just so you know, Scott and Reggie are separate pieces but I’d make you a deal for the pair. Who would want me to separate them anyway? I’ll post some more as I do them so keep checking back.

Independent Creators Expo

chalmers

In a few weeks Wright State University will be hosting the first Independent Creators Expo for small press cartoonists in Dayton, Ohio! To celebrate such an awesome event that’s happening right here in my home town I’ve put this mini comic together that will debut at the show. It’s a little darker than my usual work (must be all those television programs I’ve been watching lately) so buyer beware.

Chalmers is an actual town in Indiana that I’ve driven past many times on I-65 on my visits to Chicago (it’s the town with all of those giant wind turbines in case you’ve been down that same stretch of highway). This comic book is the story of a young man from Chalmers who finds that the wind farm’s construction affects him and others in ways never intended.

This and many other awesome comics by some fantastic creators from the Dayton area and beyond will be at I.C.E. and so should you! The show will be held Saturday February 1st from 10 am – 5 pm at Wright State University’s Student Union Hall. For more information check out I.C.E.’s website here.

Boardwalk Empire

boardwalkempire

I’ve become addicted to a new television show called Boardwalk Empire. In case you’re unfamiliar it’s the story of Atlantic City at the beginning of prohibition. It stars Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald and a ton of other super talented people like Michael Shannon who is depicted here as Federal Agent Nelson Van Alden of the Bureau of Prohibition (one of my favorite characters from the series).

I believe they’re on season four right now but I’m watching it on dvds I get from the library and am only in the middle of  season two as of this post (so no spoilers please!) but am pretty much hooked. Check it out if you don’t mind violence, dirty language and full frontal nudity (all in service of a good yarn of course).
