stockman
While ripping apart an old issue of Life Magazine from 1948 I noticed theses images under the heading “Pictures To The Editor”. They were sent in by a reader, Frank Stockman, with the following text:

“Sirs:
Recently I visited the New York Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition of collages (paste-ups) which the museum and the critics consider “a force in modern art”. Collage is also considered important as a “spontaneous release of creative impulse.” With shears, paste and a few copies of LIFE I have been spontaneously releasing such impulses for years and attach samples. Is it art?”

I’ve gotta say it’s definitely art you were doing. I think they’re just great. Absurd and still funny after sixty six years!

I tried doing a Google image search to see more of Frank’s work but unfortunately nothing came up. That’s why I decided to share these images here among my own collage posts. Hope you enjoy them as well.
