From Hell

fromhellAbove is an illustration I did of Inspector Fred Abberline, a character from a comic book by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell called From Hell. It started when I was around twelve years old as a serial running in the horror anthology Taboo. My older brother, knowing I liked horror and had a fascination with serial killers, loaned me his copies of Taboo to read.

As I devoured it the initial thrill of reading a comic book about the ghastly horrors of Jack the Ripper was met with confusion in my adolescent mind. This was not exactly what I’d expected… but I really liked it. The scratchy artwork, the meticulous references and the overall air of something bigger, much, much bigger than a story about murder seemed to be unfolding. It was a little much for me at that age but I knew I had glimpsed something unique.

A couple of years later I noticed that From Hell was being collected and slowly released in installments about once each year. I began buying them and simply couldn’t wait until the next release. The story was complex and layered but I was finally starting to grasp it. Every time a new installment hit the shelves I reread all the previous ones before investigating the new one. This went on until I was almost twenty years old when the series was finally completed. I was sad to see if finally come to an end but I knew that down the road I would reread the entire series.

Well here we are a decade and a half later and I finally decided to reread it. I knew the likelihood of it holding up to the level that my nostalgia and fuzzy memories have placed it was pretty slim. Much to my surprise when I read it this time it seemed even better than I remembered. Such a great comic book. In fact I’m fairly confident that it is my all time favorite.

So the above sketch is my tribute to such an amazing book that has inspired and entertained me for the majority of my life.

As a side note I also watched the From Hell film recently. To compare the two I ask you to visualize your favorite meal. Now imagine a stick of chewing gum whose flavor is supposed to be that same meal. To me the film is that gum. It contains a hint of the overall experience with none of the complexities and lasting flavor. There are a couple of nice scenes and some fine acting but ultimately it is barely an echo of the initial explosion that is the comic.

So do yourself a favor. Pick up a copy of the spiffy collected version of the comic currently in print from the fine folks at Top Shelf and see what you think. And as a disclaimer, even though I said it’s about so much more than a few ghastly murders, it does have some gruesome and bawdy imagery from time to time. So if you are not so much a fan of that and opt to skip it… then consider yourself forever missing out on a true gem.

Breaking Bad

Well, the best show since Alf is soon to be off the air (maybe like Alf we can hope for a Saturday morning cartoon spin off to follow) and to commemorate its greatness I’ve done portraits of some of its more memorable characters. Included here are Walt, Jesse, Hank, Skyler, Walt Jr., Marie, Gustavo, Gale, Ted, Hector, Mike and Heisenberg.

Now even though I did these for fun I’ve put these up for sale on E-bay. Please check them out here and let anyone know about them who might be interested (What great Christmas gifts they’d make you say? Why I hadn’t even thought of that).

And if for some reason you haven’t seen this amazing television series I can’t stress enough what a gem you’ve been missing! It gets pretty darn dark at times (drugs, murder, etc.) so if those sort of themes aren’t for you then you might want to avoid it… but otherwise I can’t say enough about how truly fantastic this show is and how much I’ll miss it when it’s gone.

Are you Sirius?

My lovely lady friend Kathleen is a super fan not only of Harry Potter but also of Gary Oldman in general… so I did this sketch of Sirius Black last night while watching an episode of Breaking Bad. I love that show. More on that next post…

Happy Birthday!

Saturday September 21st is the birthday of Bill Groundhog Day Ghostbustin’ Ass Murray. I’m going to celebrate by watching one of his classic films like Caddyshack, Stripes or Garfield.  You should celebrate with me (from the convenience of your own home of course) by watching one too!

Or if you’d prefer to celebrate another way you can purchase the original artwork for the above drawing from me for $20 post paid to anywhere in the United States (I’ll even personalize it if you’d like).

Happy birthday Bill!

Skateboard Auction

So I’m more of an illustrator/cartoonist but when faced with the opportunity to do a painting (especially for a good cause) you’d better believe I’m in.

This is a skateboard painted by me which will be up for auction on September 13th (that’s Friday the 13th for those of you taking note) at We Care Arts located at 3035 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, Ohio 45429. The proceeds will help facilitate We Care’s ongoing mission of providing a place for people with emotional, mental and/or physical disabilities to learn about, create and even sell their artwork.

Now even if you’re not in the Dayton area you can still take part in the art auction online. For all the details visit We Care’s facebook page here or their website here. And if you are from around here and aren’t familiar with the great work We Care does please take a moment to visit their site… I mean c’mon… if you’re reading this chances are you’ve got a few minutes to spare, right?

The good people at We Care Arts received four skateboards for the auction and in a moment of poor judgement gave me one of them and told me to paint it however I wanted. After a few minutes of careful thought I said, “Sea Beast!”  because I love giant sea monsters… what can I say.

That decided I went to work on it and for your entertainment I’ve included step by step photos of the transformation of a brand new board into a one of a kind piece of art. You lucky devils, you!

Please consider stopping by We Care Arts on Fri. Sept. 13th for their all day art auction (1pm-9pm) and tell anyone who might be interested in skateboards (and tons of other sweet stuff)! Thanks!

Here we have the brand new skateboard right out of the shrink wrap it was shipped in.DSCF0182

The first thing I did was give it a nice black base coat.

DSCF0186

Next I put in the rough outline of  the sea creature (note the sketch I was working from).

DSCF0190

After the creature got a second coat of paint it seemed like a good idea to rough in the sea (you can’t have a sea beast without a sea).

DSCF0192

I didn’t really like those pointy wave crashes so I decided to make them a bit cartoonier looking.

DSCF0193

Next went in the clouds. I made them pretty and pink to contrast the horror that would soon be happening below.

DSCF0194

Then I went in and gave some definition to the outline of the creature’s body.

DSCF0195

Next came the beginnings of his face.

DSCF0196

More definition to his face (including pointy teeth with which to eat seamen… that’s seamen with an “a”).

DSCF0197

Next I added an outline to the waves.

DSCF0198

Then I began stippling in the texture of the sea beast’s skin.

DSCF0199

Then it was the rough version of the sea vessel and some signs of turbulent water around it.

DSCF0200

Next I finished up the stippling…

DSCF0201

…and added in some definition to the ship and water.

DSCF0204

Then I touched up the clouds… oh hey, everyone say hi to my good pal Uma!

DSCF0225

Satisfied with the end result I added some varnish.

DSCF0207

And finally a second coat of varnish to finish it up!

DSCF0229

Here is the finished product outside in the sunlight!

…and the ship.

The artist with the completed “Sea Beast” (note this was all before noon… pretty amazing).

And that’s how you paint a skateboard my friends! Be sure to visit We Care Arts on Fri. Sept. 13th to bid on this and tons of other art to support one of the best organizations in the community and the artists who benefit so much from its existence. I would greatly appreciate you spreading the word via all of your social media outlets (as well as good old fashioned word of mouth). Thanks!
